When we work with children—whether in counselling, assessment, or intervention—it’s essential that we start by listening. Without a clear way to understand a child’s own experience of their home or school life, we risk overlooking what matters most to them. This can lead to misguided support, missed concerns, or decisions that fail to reflect the child’s needs.
The Children’s Experience and Perspective Interview (CEPI) was developed to make it easier for children to share how things are going in the settings that shape their lives. Using simple visual scales and prompts, CEPI creates space for children to express what feels safe, fair, enjoyable, or difficult. It’s an accessible, versatile tool that helps clinicians hear the child’s voice in a structured and meaningful way.
